Mosaic Relies on Adept Document Management for Tracking All Plant Assets at their Esterhazy Mining Sites
Quakertown, PA, June 25, 2008
One of the biggest challenges facing the agriculture industry today is the growing demand for potash to make fertilizer. As a result, companies like The Mosaic Company, which mines potash, is focused on major expansions. Along with those large expansions, there are tremendous numbers of drawings created and revised for each plant site that need to be managed and tracked.
Terry Heal, mechanical project engineer, Willis Pushka, Electrical Draftsman, and Ed Ellinger, Mechanical Draftsman, are responsible for document management at Mosaicís Esterhazy mine site at Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, Canada. They use Adept document management from Synergis Software to manage approximately 62,000 files. In addition to engineering, Adept is being used by the Purchasing, Planning, Maintenance, and Construction teams.
Heal, Pushka, and Ellinger are long time advocates of engineering document management. They installed and used their first document management system from 1993 to 2003--until it no longer supported the latest upgrades to their AutoCADÆ tools. As they searched for a replacement, their two top criteria were support for the latest versions of their Autodesk® CAD tools and, most importantly, a solution that does not encrypt any files.
"What we wanted was to be able to find the drawings, have a secure place to put them and if something went wrong we wanted to be able to access those drawings on our hard drive without them being encrypted," said Pushka.
"With Adept, we certainly have stronger control over the drawings. We wanted to eliminate the possibility of two people working on the same drawing simultaneously, we wanted to track revisions, and we wanted to maintain a history of the drawing," added Heal. "Adept's Sign In and Sign Out features along with its ability to restrict access to only authorized personnel were additional considerations."
Managing and Tracking All Mining Site Assets
Adept is managing all types of files, including AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop, Autodesk® Inventor, Microsoft® Office, JPEGs and scanned legacy drawings. Before Adept, Before Adept, they filed every paper document and revision in a drawer. Now, 95 percent of its engineering design drawings have been scanned into Adept for easy searching, tracking, and access.
"Basically, Adept manages every drawing needed for us to build a plant site. We can track every wire, every piece of gravel and concrete, locations, radioactive sources, you name it. Everything that is secure on the plant site that has a drawing is managed within Adept," explained Pushka.
